GLP-1 Receptor Agonists: The Newer Class

Semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), liraglutide (Victoza), and dulaglutide (Trulicity) mimic a hormone that tells your pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar is high. They also slow digestion and reduce appetite, which is why many people lose weight on them.

Most are injected once weekly or daily. They've also been shown to reduce cardiovascular risk in people with heart disease.

SGLT2 Inhibitors: Removing Sugar Through Urine

Dapagliflozin (Farxiga), empagliflozin (Jardiance), and canagliflozin (Invokana) work by blocking a protein in your kidneys that reabsorbs glucose — so excess sugar is excreted in urine instead of staying in your blood.

They also have proven benefits for heart failure and kidney disease, making them increasingly popular for patients with those conditions.

Insulin: When Other Medications Aren't Enough

Some people with type 2 diabetes eventually need insulin — either because their pancreas has stopped producing enough, or because other medications aren't controlling blood sugar adequately. People with type 1 diabetes need insulin from the start.

Insulin comes in many forms: rapid-acting (like insulin aspart/NovoLog), long-acting (like insulin glargine/Lantus), and combinations. Your doctor will determine which type and dose is right for you.
